During the months of July-September, we conducted a field test at
eight public libraries to:
- Collect feedback
from library staff on a beta version of the web site and some
of the materials for the toolkit;
- Collect
tracking data on use of the Diabetes booklet by the targeted audience;
- Document
how these public libraries cooperate with other community based
organizations (CBOs) to publicize and hold an outreach event at
the library which will highlight the role of public libraries
in providing health information to minorities, and the importance
of medical research;
- Document
ideas and activities from librarians that might be used in a Healthy
People Library Week during the dissemination phase of the project;
- Interview
library staff and others about the outreach event and to collect
further data.
Based on the field testing, we have developed a final
report, a series of case studies aimed at public librarians.
Lessons learned from the case studies have been presented in a readable,
descriptive narrative of how each public library worked with its
partner organizations to promote the materials, and include activities
that might be used in a Healthy People Library promotion.
The
eight libraries involved in the field tests were: Anne
Arundel County Public Library (MD), Arlington
County Public Library (VA), Central
Rappahannock Regional Library (VA), Las
Vegas-Clark County Library District (NV), New
Orleans Public Library (LA), Rapid
City Public Library (SD), San
Francisco Public Library (CA), and Wheaton
Public Library (MD).
